Factors that can Lead to Acid Reflux

Dealing with Acid Reflux and it's Causes

Heartburn or acid reflux is an avoidable disorder. When the stomach is unable to control the production of acid causing it to back up into the esophagus and throat this condition is known as heartburn or acid reflux. Sometimes the condition can be medical related. Usually however it's caused by something you've done or have a habit of doing. Read on to find ways to prevent the potential causes of this condition.

If you don't get enough sleep, you could be setting yourself up for an attack. The body needs roughly eight hours of sleep every night. Your body needs this time to rest, relax and repair itself from the day to day life you lead. When you don't get enough sleep at night your body can react badly. The ability for the brain to function can become impaired. Sometimes you get clumsy. Sometimes your stomach produces more acid than usual and you have to deal with an acid reflux attack. The frequency of your attacks should noticeably decrease when you get plenty of rest.

Various drugs and medicines can be acid reflux causes. If you regularly take muscle relaxers, this may be what's causing your acid reflux or heartburn. In some cases, drugs taken to treat blood pressure also cause heartburn and acid reflux. Some people even suffer from acid reflux symptoms after taking over the counter medications that thin the blood, such as Advil and ibuprofen. These medications and any others that contribute to acid reflux symptoms are best avoided by people with sensitive stomachs.

If, however, you need them for other conditions, ask your doctor what you can do to counteract the side effects they are causing with your digestive system.

Eating a heavy meal and then bending over can bring on an acid reflux attack. This is because, when your stomach is full, it produces more acid to help break down your meal so that it can be fully absorbed by your body. The flap that keeps your food and acid in your stomach is more likely to flutter when the stomach is full. Bending over can cause that to fail which sends acid rushing into your esophagus and, potentially out of your mouth (yuck). To prevent this, stay upright after your meals. Acid reflux is an extremely uncomfortable condition. Even if it doesn't prevent you from engaging in most activities, it can make you miserable when it strikes. In general, only the worst attacks seriously impact your everyday life, but this is enough. Thankfully you can do quite a lot to cut down on the acid reflux causes in your life. This article has explored some of the main causes.
